Meditation
Get ready for something beautiful - listen to this meditation to support, nourish and connect you.
Decolonising our practice
The world often feels like it is unravelling.
But for many of the earth’s people, because of colonialism it has always been so, history likes to ignore this.
The privilege we often get to experience when we see nothing as being wrong is the very reason we need to question all that we see, hear, feel, and experience.
We are about to dive deep into practices inspired by Shamanism and Native American spirituality, involving deep connections of self and soul. Therefore I warmly invite you to take a moment to acknowledge not only where these practices are from, but what it means to us to unpack their goodness and how we can interact with them with eyes that are not conditioned by white supremacy and actions which take the Sacred out of their original context.
We are looking at drumming for wellbeing. We need to look at how our very thinking around sickness and how people get better has shaped our access to ancient wisdom and tools that will help us. The beliefs which have influenced our thinking are largely Eurocentric in nature, we have been taught and conditioned in the past to accept a view of why people need healing and what is required to ‘fix’ them. Or mask the symptoms if that is more convenient to society.
In fact, quick fixes are seen as the norm. We can go deeper into exploring and having a open mind so that we can see sickness in society as belonging to society, that the individual is part of a whole, and that belonging to community, to the world and to ourselves is essential to us becoming complete.
In the context of the vagus nerve, nervous system regulation, trauma and anxiety particularly, it is the very normalisation of experiences which contribute to a dysregulation within us in the first place that creates instability. Its time to slow down and welcome in truth.
Normalising inequality for example, has woven trauma deep into the fabric of society, and so beginning to behave with awareness will allow you to become a cycle breaker. The very fact you are doing this training is supporting your journey to supporting the breaking of ancestral cycles and bringing in oneness.

Buffalo Drums used in Shamanic Drumming
The drum we are focused on for this course is a buffalo drum.
This drum is deep, light to hold and can come in various sizes.
The beater, and the fabric it is covered with will influence the sound as well as the size and depth of the drum itself.
You can use any drum to create these rhythms, this one widely used for this type of work and has its roots in the Indigenous Native American cultures.
Watch this video on making the most of your drum sounds.
